To .TEL or not to .TEL

in on

Welcome to the internets newest domain extension – .TEL

.TEL promises to be one of the most widely used domain names in the future. Maybe even more widely used than .COM.  I predict that .TEL is going to soon be a must have domain name for your business and your person.  It is the first domain name that I know of that is not intended to host a traditional web site at… it is going to be your world wide web directory.

“All of your contact information in one place – .tel enables you to store all of your contact information, including telephone numbers, email addresses, your favorite websites, social media pages, your blog sites, location-based sites, links to OpenID, OpenSocial or other identity verification solutions, and numerous other contact channels and technologies, all under one simple name. In future, this will also mean being able to encrypt your information so no one else can see it unless you grant them access.”

Currently in ‘Sunrise’ release, only legal trademark holders can register the .TEL domain. If you have a registered trademark, you can contact us and register your .TEL domain. You will have to prove legal ownership of the registered trademark. Please remeber that a corporate registration is not a trademark. You need to have a federally registered trademark.

In December, we will be able to widely register .TEL domain names for our clients. Once the Sunrise period for trademark owners passes, domains will sell on a first come, first serve basis.

“Join a global online directory that provides you instant worldwide exposure…
Integrate all your means of communication in a single place under your control…
Update and manage your contact information and keywords in real time…
Increase your search engine visibility through descriptive keywords…
Provide a fast way for your customers to connect with you in a single click from any mobile device…
… all without the need to build, host or manage a website.”

Once you register your .TEL domain, you can login to a great easy web interface to control your new .TEL directory listings. While in it’s beta stage, you are encouraged to only put public details in your .TEL listing, but in the future you will have the ability to make some of the data private. Only people you give the key to, will be able to see your private data.

Folders allow you to include data regarding your organization, for example;

  • yourcompany.tel – the main corporate site
  • billsmith.yourcompany.tel – bill smiths details
  • accounting.yourcompany.tel – your accounting department
  • sales.yourcompany.tel  etc. Etc.

So… what impact will the .TEL domain have on Google Search Result pages? Will Google see your .TEL listing as a reliable source of qualifying information? Will the Google algorythm use the .TEL information you provide and calculate value towards your pagerank? My prediction is that .TEL will have an impact. I predict that it will be a positive impact.

“Search engine optimization built in – For those more concerned with being
found online, the .tel enables you to be discovered more quickly through
search engines. The structured information, key words and link to a domain
name all enable search engines to see the relevance and purpose of the .tel
and therefore its usefulness to people searching for related information.”

I have setup a sample domain for you to have a look at here – https://davidwest.vip.tel
