Conficker.C – A Virus to Write Home About?

in on

Doing my daily rounds of Social Media sites this morning, I thought I would check out LinkedIn’s Questions and Answers to see what is being said about the Conficker.C Virus.  I thought I would share some of the responses here.

One LinkedIn member asks,

“How many people have had their IT network infected by the Conficker Virus?”

Then come the Answers. I’m just going to highlight the ones that I felt were well thought out…

Michael Rowland, and account manager for a Computer and Security Technology company responded,

“This is just another reinforcement of the fact that patch management is one of the most important aspects of securing your network. If patched correctly (and rebooted) then you can avoid such virus’ which take advantage of vulnerabilities that have patches available. Check out – https://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/MS08-067.mspx“

Rick Scarras, another IT Consultant wrote,

“Several Win32 conficker removal tools are now available but because the conficker worm also spreads through portable storage devices such as USB drives, disabling your PC’s autorun feature for external media is recommended. You can download the downadup/conficker removal tool from Symantec. “

This whole Conficker.C virus has Calgary IT service providers like our friends over at Bulletproof working a little over-time lately. They are being exposed to numerous unique networks and tons of different types of hardware on a day to day basis. In house IT personnel should be turning to companies like Bulletproof in order to leverage a broader experience base at times like this.

Regarding the advise from the LinkedIn Answers above – I will be checking with the Bulletproof guys for advice prior to jumping into the fire. You should too.

If you are not aware of LinkedIn or LinkedIn Answers – it is a social community of business people connecting. Answers give you the opportunity to “answer” public questions and position yourself as an expert in your industry. Answers are ranked by the original person who posted the question.

I will not spend a bunch of time talking about all the details of this worm, the guys at Bulletproof have done a wonderful job on this at their blog.  To learn more about the Conficker.C virus and steps to prevent this worm from impacting your business or computers, visit the Bulletproof InfoTech blog today.
